Powering Imagination: Our Engineers Help Bring Art to Life at Serpentine Galleries in London

At Evotech, we take pride in helping to transform bold creative visions into reality. Recently, our engineers had the privilege of supporting an extraordinary new commission at London’s iconic Serpentine Galleries, a project that celebrates imagination, play, and the limitless possibilities of design.
Nestled in the heart of Kensington Gardens, beside the Serpentine South Gallery, visitors have discovered the Play Pavilion, an immersive public art installation designed by celebrated British architect Sir Peter Cook. Known for his experimental and playful approach to architecture, Cook once again challenged traditional boundaries by envisioning a space that doesn’t just display art, but invites people of all ages to step inside it and become part of the experience.
At its core, the Play Pavilion is constructed from one of the world’s most beloved creative tools: LEGO® bricks. These colourful, interlocking pieces, symbols of imagination across generations, have been used as both building material and artistic expression, transforming the Pavilion into a lively, interactive environment. Inside, visitors have been encouraged to touch, explore, and participate, making the installation not only a piece of architecture but also a living, evolving artwork.
The Pavilion is the result of a collaboration between the Serpentine Galleries and the LEGO Group, two organisations that share a commitment to inspiring creativity and connection through play. Together, they have brought to life a project that reaches beyond the gallery’s walls, extending into the park where it can be enjoyed by the public.
By situating the Pavilion outdoors, the installation became accessible to all, from curious children to seasoned art lovers, breaking down barriers and reminding us that play is a universal language. It’s a project that redefines how we think about art: not as something to be observed from a distance, but as something we can engage with, build upon, and experience in community.
Evotech’s Role: Illuminating Creativity
Behind every great creative project lies an equally dedicated technical team working to ensure that imagination is supported by practical expertise. For the Play Pavilion, Evotech’s engineers played a crucial role in bringing light, energy, and atmosphere to the structure.
Our team was responsible for the installation of electrical wiring and lighting systems, carefully integrated into the Pavilion’s design to enhance the playful spirit of the space both day and night. Thoughtfully placed lighting ensured that the vivid colours of the LEGO bricks came alive after sunset, creating a striking visual effect that transformed the Pavilion into a glowing beacon within Kensington Gardens.
Evotech regularly supports Serpentine Galleries and artists and over the years, our engineers have supported numerous ambitious installations, providing the technical backbone that allows artists and designers to experiment without limitation. From complex wiring systems to subtle lighting arrangements, we ensure that every detail works seamlessly, allowing the artwork itself to shine.
The Play Pavilion was more than just an architectural structure, it was a reminder of the joy and creativity that play brings to people of all ages. By supporting this commission, Evotech is proud to have contributed to a project that embodies our own values: innovation, collaboration, and the belief that imagination should have no boundaries.
We are delighted to have played our part in this inspiring initiative and look forward to continuing our work with the Serpentine Galleries, helping bring future visions to life with the same energy, expertise, and passion.
