UK rule change allows businesses to benefit from flexible electricity contracts

Elexon, established in 2000 to manage the Balancing and Settlement Code (BSC) ahead of the New Electricity Trading Arrangements (NETA) that went live in March 2001, has implemented a significant rule change that allows independent electricity aggregators to directly participate in the wholesale electricity market.

This development is expected to accelerate decarbonisation efforts by enabling consumers, such as shops and businesses, to leverage their flexibility in adjusting power usage to save on energy bills and help balance the electricity system. This change removes barriers to empower independent aggregators to unlock new value streams in the market and is viewed as a significant step toward a greener and more efficient energy system.
