FIA releases guidance on pressure equipment directive compliance
The Fire Industry Association (FIA) has released a new guidance note on the European Union's Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) and its relevance to certain fire suppression systems. The note focuses on the PED's application to fixed gaseous fire extinguishing systems, water mist systems using containers, and portable fire extinguishers.
The PED, originally introduced as Directive 97/23/EC and now under Regulation 2014/68/EU, sets safety and integrity standards for pressure equipment. Following Brexit, the UK has adopted the PED into its domestic laws as the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulation, with products destined for the UK market requiring UKCA labelling. The guidance emphasises the role of conformity assessment bodies, such as EU Notified Bodies and UK Accredited Bodies, which ensure pressure equipment meets safety standards.
While components in fire suppression systems have generally complied with PED, there are concerns regarding the compliance of fully assembled or refurbished systems. The guidance aims to clarify these concerns and help manufacturers and suppliers navigate the regulatory requirements, ensuring safety and compliance in fire suppression systems.
