Making MEES compliance easier with building controls

The President of the Building Controls Industry Association explains that by installing a modern, intelligent building management system, landlords can optimise the energy efficiency of their properties without the need for major, disruptive renovations and meet the criteria for compliance with the UK’s Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) regulations.

The impending MEES regulations are set to significantly impact UK landlords, requiring upgrades to improve energy efficiency in buildings by 2030. This creates pressure, especially for landlords of older properties, who face costly renovations to meet the required Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) of C for domestic landlords and B for commercial buildings. However, Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) offer an affordable solution, optimising energy use through advanced controls without the need for major renovations.

With short payback periods and the potential to reduce energy consumption by up to 30%, BEMS provide a practical way for landlords to comply with MEES, enhance tenant comfort, and future-proof their properties against stricter regulations.
